Hello ASA friends and Family,

We are in an unprecedented time in the world and while the light at the end of the tunnel appears dark it is important to understand that we will overcome this Coronavirus outbreak together. Our community of sailors, instructors and schools always bands together in times of need. Today is no different. If you live on your boat be sure to look out for your fellow liveaboards and lend a helping hand if they need it. In your neighborhoods reach out to those who might need a helping hand or make sure to ask others for assistance if you yourself need something. While we must be socially distant we celebrate that we share a common love for the outdoors, the ocean and the sailing lifestyle. To that end, we should always support each other. The American Sailing Association is your neighborhood. It is a community of sailors. While we might not be right next door to each other we are here if you need to talk or laugh or even cry. Find us on Facebook and engage in discussion. Very soon, this will pass and we will be once again ready to take to the water.

We don’t have to remind you that currently the hot topic in the news is the Corona Virus (COVID-19) but we could shed some light on how we think it affects the sailing community. After all, when we get on a boat and the breeze fills the main, we feel the tug of nature on the boat and our bodies; it is hard to imagine that anything can harm us. Sailing often takes us into a state of euphoria.

We may not be planning a sailing trip today but in a couple of months, we will need a getaway to our local waters. Take a look at some inspiration to help you get through the next few weeks.

The Solo Sailing Vacation

Let me quickly explain, this is not about sailing single-handed across a large body of water. This is about venturing out alone and sailing with new people. It is about the solo traveler looking for some adventure and finding it while sailing. These days plenty of people are going at it alone and there is something to be said about that.

Send your teenager away and he returns to make you realize that even though you thought you were doing your part for the environment you are shocked by how much more you can contribute. Ours returned a conservationist. He made us more aware of what we could do to do our part for the environment.

Spend any time on a sailboat and you’ll soon find that sailors can be a bit salty. Their jokes are a bit off-color and their language might border on inappropriate. Is it a cliche to have the mouth of a sailor? Well, this attempt at humor by ASA Instructor, Bill Dunbar, is safe for work and definitely PG-13. It just goes to show you that you can have fun while learning a little about sailing.
