January 2021
Hello ASA Friends and Family,

It’s a fresh new year and we’ve set our sights on sailing as much as we can. 2021 will take ASA to a new level and one of our goals is to bring in lots of new sailors. While our plans are to add a batch of young and diverse sailors to our community, we also want to help our faithful members get out on the water as much as possible. This month we talk about charters and sailing outside familiar waters. Is this the year that you bareboat charter? We hope so. If you haven’t already done so, sign up at one of our many ASA affiliates to get your Bareboat 104 certification and, if you’re planning a bareboat in the Mediterranean, you will want to add an International Proficiency Certificate as well. Our biggest hope is that, by the summer months, we are all sailing with friends and family once again.

For now, stay safe and start planning your return to the water!

Happy New Year!
Cindy Shabes, ASA President

Where to Sail in 2021
Once It’s Safe To Travel, Where Should You Go? By the end of the COVID-19 crisis we will all have been sailing in circles for a year so, naturally, you will be in dire need of an escape. You will need a destination to look forward to. When the world is safe these are the places you should travel to.
Do I Need An IPC?
Are you qualified to Bareboat Charter? That is a question that charter companies will ask when deciding whether or not to put you in charge of your own vessel. In the Caribbean, charter companies will often use your ASA logbook, certifications, and sailing resume as evidence of your sailing experience. In Europe, the situation is a bit different and you will most likely need an International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) to charter your own boat.
Should a Skipper Be a Good Swimmer?
There are two occasions when knowing how to swim will increase the odds of avoiding a bad accident. The first is if you fall overboard before teaching your crew how to come about and stop the boat by heaving to. The second is if one of your crew falls overboard and s/he is unconscious, perhaps head down in the water.
