Sailing can mean different things to different people. To some it’s a relaxing day on the water, away from the stresses and pressures of daily life. To others it’s an opportunity to race and compete with friends and opponents. To some it’s a way of life, living on a boat and traveling to remote countries and islands. To others it’s an intellectual and engineering challenge, trying to get better performance and more speed by deploying advanced materials, software and engineering.

Underlying all of these there is a set of skills and understanding that allows the sailor to safely use his boat on the water. The basics of these skills can be learned in a few hours but these skills can be honed and developed over a lifetime. Many people get their first experience of sailing as young children and continue to sail well into old age.

On Jinjihu we sail a type of boat called a J80. It’s an easy boat to sail and very safe because of its heavy keel but it is also quite sophisticated and you can learn a lot sailing one. It’s 8 meters long, has 2 or sometimes 3 sails and can be sailed by between two and five people depending on whether it’s being sailed for fun or if it’s being seriously raced in competition with other boats. Once you can proficiency sail a J80 in strong winds, you can really call yourself a sailor.

So, come along to our club, Baqi which is at the marina on JinJi Hu near the big wheel. We’ll take you out on the lake, give you a chance to take some of the controls and give you your first experience of sailing. We will introduce you to the beauty and thrill of sailing. We’ll open the door for you to a whole range of adventures both inside and outside the club – for instance, last summer a large group of us went to Croatia for a week to sail in the Adriatic.
