That said, in going through Moorings and their lesser companies (Barefoot, Sunsail ?), we have always been able to bareboat charter in the Med (Spain to Croatia), i.e. Moorings, etc., have paved the way for less ASA-qualified sailors to charter there. Each of these people (probably 5) do have a sailing resume’ I assume to be on file with Moorings. From experience over the past 15 yrs in chartering, it appears to me that once you get that first bareboat charter on your resume you are good to go (unfortunately, the damage you may have done out of ignorance or stupidity is NOT shared with other charter companies). I’ve boarded my charter boat (from Moorings) to find all types of severe damage (in once case both mains’l and jib needed replacement) done by the previous captain; and it is commonly said that all you need to charter a boat in the BVIs is a credit card (probably true for some charter companies, but as I said above once you have that one charter sail on your resume’ other more rigorous charter companies may let you sail w/o further question).

I have not had to show it in Asia, like Thailand where I sailed 2 years ago. Its worth having if you meet all the IPC criteria. I would definately add ASA 114 to your skills. Cats are difficult to Med moor if you don’t have experience.
