Established in 1980 Spinnaker Sailing and has been providing sailing instruction on San Francisco Bay for over 34 years. As the oldest operating American Sailing Association school in the country Spinnaker Sailing has certified thousands of sailors and in the processes established itself as a leader in Sailing Instruction.
Our location in Redwood City, California is an ideal place to learn with great weather, smooth seas and consistent winds. In addition to locally run classes Spinnaker also runs Bareboat Chartering and Catamaran certification classes on our overseas sailing vacations in South Pacific, Caribbean and Mediterranean.
Our instructors are ASA certified and U.S. Coast Guard Licensed providing students the most experienced and knowledgeable instructors. The instructional staff at Spinnaker Sailing have years of teaching experience making learning, safe and enjoyable. Spinnaker Sailing prides itself on our instructional staff. Many of our instructors have been teaching with us for over 10 to as some as many as 30 years. Their commitment and genuine interest in the success of each student make Spinnaker Sailing a special place to learn to sail.
Students who graduate from Spinnaker Sailing School not only received the internationally recognized certification from ASA but the confidence to sail anywhere in the world. Our Learn to Sail guarantee is our way of assuring students that they will be able to confidently sail on their own once they complete classes. Our current fleet consist 20 boats ranging in size from 25 feet to 40 feet and have been picked for their suitability for San Francisco Bay.
Spinnaker Sailing in Redwood City is the perfect sailing club providing, sailing instruction and sailing activities for those living on the San Francisco Peninsula, South Bay and East Bay locations. Spinnaker does host a Wednesday Night Race series where members race in a one design fleet. Spinnaker Sailing also offers a club membership program giving members an opportunity to sail on club sponsored sails up to 4 days a week at an affordable rate.
American Sailing Certifications Offered
Learn to skipper a 20' - 27' sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered 25'-35' keelboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.
Learn how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30'-45' sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring / mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.
Learn the the navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. On-water coastal navigation skills elements are contained in the ASA103, Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising, and ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising, in progressively increasing levels of detail.
Learn to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any conditions.
Learn the celestial navigation theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in offshore waters. On-water celestial navigation skills elements are demonstrated in ASA 108, Offshore Passagemaking.
Learn to skipper an auxiliary-powered sailing cruising catamaran of approximately 30-45' feet in length during a multi-day liveaboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.
Learn to apply basic celestial navigation theory and practice to determine latitude and longitude at sea using a sextant and Nautical Almanac.
Learn basic docking skills for boats with single inboard or outboard engines. Discover the basic theory and hands-on techniques needed to dock and undock boats in an efficient manner and without damage or injury.
