It is important to understand that you cannot learn to skipper a boat without actually being on a boat but you can learn some of the information before your on the water courses.
It’s no secret that the COVID-19 crisis has changed all of our lives forever and the sailing world is no different. From closed marinas to social distancing on sailboats, ASA has begun to re-examine what the new normal will look like once we are all allowed to go back to our daily routines. One thing that ASA did learn is that there is a need for online courses in the form of interactive online instruction. While study at home courses were already being utilized by some sailing schools the need for a bonafide online course alternative has been realized and plenty of schools are currently working on models, pilot programs and modern versions of their current class offerings.

Spinnaker Sailing in Redwood City is providing online learning courses for ASA 105, 107 and 119. Spinnaker Sailing also offers all of their review classes online (ASA 101, 103, 104). All classroom sessions for ASA 101, 103, and 104 are also run online with the practical exercises still run on the water. They are limiting the students to 2 per boat for the 101 and 103 and 3 on the 104

Description: A 97-minute interactive knot-tying instruction course. Filmed on a sailboat with an actual student, and addresses questions and common mistakes, while showing the knots being used in marine applications. It has 22 chapters, one discussing each knot, so it addresses all the required ASA knots plus more, including how to best tie up a dinghy, pass a line, coil a line, fake out anchor line, etc.

Description: Home Study Course: Demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. Description: This is like a normal in-person class: you’re with an instructor and other students, learning from their questions as well as yours, and with us watching you do your plotting after we show you how. Except… you don’t have to travel to get to it! It’s not a home study course, or interactive with software. We can demonstrate physical plotting techniques, use a globe, a chart, a model boat and compass/pelorus, etc. We can have students show us their work in progress by aiming their device at their tools as they use them so we can do everything but reach out and touch them.

Description: The quarantine has disrupted our lives, but the sun, moon, stars, and planets never change. Learn to navigate with them, so you know where you are if your onboard electronics fail. ASA 117 – Learn to navigate with the Sun and Stars online in this virtual instructor led class which will be using GoToTraining video conferencing software. All content will be provide on screen with live audio interaction between the Instructor and Students just as in a classroom setting. Total class time is 10 hours broken into 5 weekly sessions with a final exam and review on the last day.
